If you’re looking to add artistic flair and unique visual elements to your home, etched glass treatments can be a great option. Etching is an art form made on the surface of glass by acidic, caustic, or abrasive techniques. Our custom glass professionals use a variety of these techniques to bring our customers the most beautiful and custom designs to their homes and businesses. Each of the following options bring a different perspective to the final etching product and can be implemented right here at More Than Glass.

Acid Etching

How Etched Glass Designs Are MadeGlass can be etched through the use of hexafluorosilicic acid, which is a colorless acid. We create a stencil with which the acid will adhere to. The acid is carefully applied directly to the area outlined in the sketch. Then, the highly corrosive solution is used to carve deep into the glass during a set amount of time. This glass etching technique can be dangerous and should only be completed by a glass professional like More Than Glass.

Leptat glass is usually the outcome of using an acid-based technique. You can do both traditional and contemporary designs using this patented acid process. Colored and/or leafing enamels can also be achieved through acid etching and these are known for their jewel-like reflections. If you’re interested in Leptat-specific products, one of our custom glass professionals is available to walk you through that process.

Sandblasting

This popular technique is also known as abrasive blasting. Many etched glass designs are made using this approach. Sandblasting happens by using high-pressure abrasive materials that cut away at the glass to make a frosted effect. We are able to sandblast at high volumes and direct precision. Many types of designs can be done through sandblasting techniques and are customizable to each client. This is one of our most-used glass etching options.

Molding

There is a mold-etching process that was developed in the 1920s that allows a glass artist to use a mold to etch directly onto a glass surface. This technique is not as widely used today due to the rise in automation, but there is still value to mastering this practice.
