Fairfax County is the most populous county in Virginia, with more than 1.1 million residents just west of Washington, D.C. Tysons is the county's main business center, and the Dulles Technology Corridor runs west through Reston and Herndon.

Different parts of the county were built at different times. Annandale and Springfield date mostly from the 1950s and 1960s.
